 The Modernist movement came to an end because of the oil embargo in the Middle East. This caused a global recession and a sense of lost hope and optimism in the movement. After this fall was a time of an almost eclectic attitude of gathering all that one could. Post Modernism was a revolt against the rationality and simplicity of the Modernist movement, similar to how the Arts and Crafts movement was against the Victorian Style.  Furniture during this time was designed for communication and statements rather than functionality. This was mainly done by the designers taking part in the Memphis Movement. They wanted to get rid of the ideas of modernism and looked to an eclectic style of design instead.  Modernism in America was very different after World War II. It focused more on functionality and practicality than before. This allowed the movement and its components to be more accessible to the average American. Manufacturing gained popularity as well. Many of the methods for manufacturing parts and equipment for the war were carried over into furniture making. This in turned allowed for more production and more popularity in general.  Much of the modernist movement focused on flat roofs, glass walls, clean lines, and open floor plans. This style was more popular on the West Coast, but it's basics of clean lines with angular details were popular throughout America. Modernism originally started in Europe, specifically Germany and France. But due to World War II the modernist movement found itself leaving Europe and moving to America instead. Because of the war the Bauhaus was forced to close. This was the main hub for the architects and designers of modernism and because the house was shut down many of them left Europe entirely and moved to the US. While Europe was recovering from World War II, the US was able to keep pushing forward in terms of designs. This forwards momentum created a difference in pre- and post-war modernism. Before the war, the movement was very theoretical and idealistic but after the hardships of war, modernism changed to become more practical and applicable to everyday life.
